Exploring with Microscopes
ImageThe Otago Centre for Electron Microscopy (OCEM) features in the national Science Learning Hub, an on-line resource tool for primary school teachers.  “Exploring with Microscopes” looks at how high-powered microscopes can shed light on structures, cells, textiles and much more that can’t be seen with the naked eye.  It also highlights at some of the amazing research being undertaken in the Centre.

Staff of the OCEM were integral in helping set-up the link, sharing their knowledge and expertise in the areas of transmission, scanning, and confocal electron microscopy.  Staff were also involved in some of the education videos available on the site.

The learning hub provides teaching resources that are based on cutting-edge scientific research being carried out in New Zealand.  It is a Ministry of Science and Innovation (MSI, formerly MORST)-funded project and is a key part of the government’s science engagement strategy.  It features many New Zealand researchers and their projects, and provides supporting material, teaching ideas and multimedia content to teachers.  The site is aimed at Years 5-10, and all material is designed to link closely with the national science curriculum.
