Brief Description of Research

Nancy Beavan is the Principle Investigator for a 2013-2015 Marsden Fund project "Living in the Shadow of Angkor", with Associate Investigator Dr Sian Halcrow. The project is based in the Cardamom Mountains, Cambodia, and aims to develop the first overall description of a 14th century AD, Late-to Post Angkorian era highland culture from a unique burial ritual employing ceramic storage jars and hand hewn coffins. The project addresses questions about demographics, health, the ritual style, the environment, and economic/trade relationships of a highland people living coincident with, yet culturally a world apart, from the Late Angkorian polity of the lowlands.
