 Congratulations to Abby Moore whose PhD thesis has been placed on the Health Sciences Division List of Exceptional PhD Theses. Abby’s thesis, entitled “Anatomical aspects of iatrogenic nerve injury”, was examined by three examiners, and subsequently defended at an oral examination. The examiners were impressed by the originality and value of the research, the impact it may have on clinical practice, and her ability to communicate critical and analytical results from her studies.

 Six 400-level research students recently presented seminars to the Department outlining their research plans as part of their postgraduate study. The students were assessed on the content of their presentation, including the hypotheses and methods of their research and expected outcomes, as part of the ANAT 458 paper: Current topics in anatomical science.

 Over the course of the first term, the Anderson Bay School junior classes have been learning about honeybees. Dr Megan Wilson visited the school to help the children learn about the biology of the honeybee. She set up a mini-laboratory class at the school to help the children understand why scientists are so interested in honeybees.

 Senior Lecturer Dr Phil Peplow and a colleague, Professor David Baxter from the School of Physiotherapy, have contributed a chapter to the recently published book Traditional Chinese Medicine – Scientific Basis for Its Use. The chapter, entitled “Translational Approach to Treating Diabetes Using Acupuncture or Electroacupuncture” focuses on clinical trials and animal studies in relation to the use of acupuncture and electroacupuncture as a treatment for diabetes.
