Congratulations to Samantha Murray who received a runner-up award at the recent Otago Medical School Research Society (OMSRS) Summer Student Speaker Awards. Samantha is a BSc(Hons) Neuroscience major. Her presentation was entitled “Does the schizophrenia-inducing cytokine IL-6 alter neurite growth in the developing brain?”

Exciting results from the radiocarbon dating of human remains from ceramic jars and coffins found in rocky outcrops in the Cardamom Mountains of southern Cambodia have just been published in the international journal Radiocarbon. Dr Nancy Beavan and Dr Sian Halcrow’s paper was deemed to be so significant for Southeast Asian archaeology that images from their work feature on the journal cover.

Congratulations to all our graduands who have, and will be, graduating in ceremonies throughout May. A number of our graduands celebrated the occasion with their families and academic staff at a graduation morning tea held in the Department on Saturday 5 May. Graduation marks the end of many years of study for our students, and it is a very happy occasion for all involved.

The newly instigated poster library has recently seen the arrival of its 50th poster (and counting). The idea for the poster storage facility was conceived by postdoctoral fellow Dr Jon Cornwall, who approached Anatomy Museum Curator Mr Chris Smith to see whether the concept could be transformed into reality. ‘I thought that there was likely to be a number of posters sitting around in offices collecting dust, and that somehow there must be a way to make use of these as a departmental resource,’ said Jon. Together, Jon and Chris have developed the project.

The Otago Centre for Electron Microscopy (OCEM) features in the national Science Learning Hub, an on-line resource tool for primary school teachers. “Exploring with Microscopes” looks at how high-powered microscopes can shed light on structures, cells, textiles and much more that can’t be seen with the naked eye. It also highlights at some of the amazing research being undertaken in the Centre. |
